Our EIGHTH Annual
Cedar Valley Homecoming is History

September 17-18-19, 2010

Wow! That is the best way to describe our eighth and latest Camp Cedar Valley Homecoming. Over 175 folks gathered in the woods and hills of just about the most beautify place in the world (not that I am at all biased on the subject). We not only had a ton of folks who remember our old camp as a camper or staff member, but we also had several Boy Scout troops and even a Cub Scout Pack this year. In fact, there were so many that we ran out of keepsake patches for the weekend. (And here I make a plug to "pre-register" for 2011 when the time comes!)

Unlike 2009, we had nearly perfect weather for the weekend! Saturday stayed mostly sunny and comfortable. Groups scattered to enjoy a chance to do a bit of trapshooting, as well as archery and rifle shooting down on the range. Others took advantage of the canoes to paddle around Lake The while still more took part in our first ever fishing tournament. Fishing seemed good with nearly everyone catching at least a few. One crew headed out back to open up the trail to Indian Rock and another to work on the old Brotherhood Circle. Rumor has it even Max Chesser got a bit "turned around" on the backside - but he found his way home in time for lunch all the same! John Phillips setup his lodge tipi and gave a great class on Indian Lore and feather work (Thanks John!).

Scott Lane again headed up cooking as Food Chairman. I don't want to say food was great (so Scott doesn't get too big of a head), but we're already starting a line for Saturday lunch 2011! The Taco Salad was again a big hit for lunch followed by roasted turkey, dressing and home made pies for supper. Top that off with two breakfasts and two cracker barrels and you can understand why all the cook crew was exhausted. (And why most of us need to go out jogging!) As a special project, Scott and the crew came up several days early this year. They scrubed and cleaned everything in the kitchen and storage hall, then repainted EVERYTHING! Seriously, the kitchen looks as good as the day it opened. (And a very big thanks to everyone who was involved - that was above and beyond guys!)

During 2010, thanks to the silent auctions of prior years we were able to help about a dozen young Scouts to attend summer camp, to the tune of about $1300. As great as that is, we just about depleted our resources for camperships. But a number of folks came forward with items to donate and Saturday evening we raised about $850, including $175 donated by the folks down on the shotgun range! In the coming months, we will post a more formal process for requesting help for Scouts in 2011. (And we will plan to again have an auction in 2011.)

Finally, John Phillips, John Hardin and others put together a great campfire for Saturday evening. Not only did we have some "old time" skits and songs, but several of the Scouts got involved with their "new time" skits. The campfire was started with a brief dedication of the fire to our friend and brother, Mike Garner. While we all greatly missed his physical presence, we know that his spirit was never far away! And that's a wrap on our 2010 doings. If you couldn't make it this year, or even if you did, start making plans for 2011. The date is already posted on the website main page. CU there!

Yours in Scouts in Scouting, Stephen White
